Those of us who live in the Mid-Michigan area have been experiencing the most wonderful weather. Our temps have been way above normal and, in fact, we have been breaking several records. On the average we are 20-30 degrees above normal and that trend is predicted to continue and we are about four weeks ahead in terms of our gardening seasons.
Thankfully, we had a fairly mild winter. I am not a cold weather fan. As a
member of a volunteer K-9 Search and Rescue team that trains every week no
matter what the weather brings, I so look forward to spring. I am sure my 19
month old Doberman, Joe Pete, is just as pleased to see the cold weather leaving
us. I love hanging up all the extra winter clothing. I don't recall ever wearing
shorts in March before but I did yesterday. Not only that, I realized my neck
was sunburned last night after working in the yard yesterday.
My gardens are showing the fruits of these warmer temps. Everything is
popping up like crazy. The crocus have bloomed and faded, the daffodils are
opening up like mad and showing their wonderful sunny faces to the world. The
peonies are up already. All the trees are budding out. The spring bulbs have
come up so fast that I am scrambling to get the beds uncovered of leaves and
winter debries before I can't get into them without destroying the blossoms.
How are your gardens coming along? Are you seeing the spring bulbs pop up out
of the ground? What are your favorites spring plants?
